Co-producers Dana and Heidi man the wine and beer station

The Back Alley Party in Hailey will continue for its ninth season on Wednesday June 20, from 6-9:30.

Presented jointly by FiggLeaf Productions and Heidiglyphics, the free concerts held outside, are always benefits for a local non-profit in the Wood River Valley.

Steve Earle to play in Boise

Grammy-award winning singer-songwriter, actor, writer and political activist Steve Earle’s stamp on rock and country music is proof that pressing boundaries makes an impact. His words have guided the soundtrack to many of life’s moments the past 30 years. Sung by such artists as Carl Perkins, Patty Loveless and Johnny Lee, Steve Earle stirs the conversation in all his endeavors.

Steve Earle

Steve Earle and his electric-live band, The Dukes are touring in support of I’ll Never Get Out of This World Alive, a remarkable album and companion book.

Earle, often described as a master storyteller, has released 13 studio albums crossing several genres – including bluegrass, roots, rock, folk and country – since 1986’s Guitar Town. The album’s title track peaked at No. 7 on the US Country chart. He went on to release such hits as ‘Nowhere Road,’ ‘Copperhead Road’ and ‘The Other Kind.’

Rolling Stone magazine named Earle ‘Country Artist of the Year’ in 1986. He’s received three Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary Folk Album for The Revolution Starts Now (2005), Best Contemporary Folk/Americana Album for Washington Square Serenade (2008) and Best Contemporary Folk/Americana Album for Townes.

Earle’s acting credits include HBOs The Wire and the feature film Leaves of Grass. He can currently be seen on HBOs hit series, Treme, as a street musician. His piece ‘This City’ garnered an Emmy nod.

Tickets can be purchased at the Egyptian Theatre Box Office (700 W Main Street; 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; closed Sunday and Monday), the Record Exchange, via phone at (208) 387-1273 or online at EgyptianTheatre.net.

Sun Valley Center for the Arts announces Summer Concert Series

Johnny Clegg and Ladysmith Black Mambazo will play on Monday, Aug. 6 at River Run Lodge; Pink Martini will play on Monday, Aug. 13 at River Run, and a return engagement by Bonnie Raitt, with special guest Mavis Staples on Thursday, Aug. 30 at the Sun Valley Pavilion.

Tickets range in price from $30 to $95. Series ticket purchasers will save 10% off the total ticket price. Members have the first opportunity to buy series tickets, starting April 13, then members will be able to purchase individual tickets starting April 20. Sales open to the general public on April 27.

Kicking off the series are South African superstars Johnny Clegg and Ladysmith Black Mambazo – touring together for the first time ever. Both are pioneers in bringing a Zulu beat to western audiences—the vocalists of Ladysmith Black Mambazo are best known for their work on Paul Simon’s Graceland, while singer/songwriter Clegg has performed all over the world. Don’t miss this special celebration of 25-years of musical camaraderie.

Johnny Clegg

The American band Pink Martini likes to mix it up—a bit of Brazilian samba, some 1930s-style French jazz, maybe a little sixties-era lounge music. See why this Oregon-based, multilingual band has an international cult following.

Finally, The Center is thrilled to welcome back Bonnie Raitt, whose sold-out 2006 concert had people buzzing for months. Raitt, who released her 19th album, Slipstream, this spring, is noted both for her bluesy voice and emotive slide guitar playing. She’ll be joined by special guest the legendary Mavis Staples, one of the greatest gospel/R&B singers of all time.

Seating is limited—buy early to avoid disappointment. Click on www.sunvalleycenter.org or call 208.726.9491 ext. 10 to purchase tickets. Tickets can also be purchased in person at The Center in Ketchum during regular business hours.

There will be appetizers and refreshments beginning at 6 p.m., followed by dancing to live music provided by The Lucky Stiffs after comments by the speakers.
